Beginning September 1, all residents aged 50 and older will be eligible to receive the shingles vaccine at no cost. This expansion is part of a phased rollout aimed at improving the health and well-being of seniors and high-risk individuals across the province.
The initial phase of the expansion starts on June 1, when the vaccine will become available to residents aged 65 and older, as well as immunocompromised individuals between the ages of 50 and 64. By September 1, eligibility will extend to include all adults aged 50 and above, regardless of health status.
This initiative is expected to significantly enhance protection against shingles and its related complications, particularly among older adults. The move is also anticipated to reduce strain on the healthcare system by decreasing hospital visits, physician appointments, and the need for pain management treatments.
The expansion aligns with recommendations from Health Accord NL, which advocates for policies that support older adults in maintaining dignity and autonomy as they age. It also supports broader goals to improve access to essential vaccines, including those for shingles and pneumonia.
Previously, the province had announced that beginning June 1, shingles vaccinations would be provided to individuals aged 65 to 70 and to immunocompromised individuals over 70 through the provincial immunization program. The latest update broadens this coverage, underscoring a continued commitment to preventative care for aging populations.
