The intense summer heat can seriously affect your skin, weakening its natural protective barrier. Excessive heat exposure may lead to heat stroke, which causes blood vessels to widen, resulting in redness, irritation, and inflammation. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, dermatologist Dr. Megha Tandon outlined four early skin warning signs of heat stroke and emphasized the importance of recognizing them early.
1. Skin inflammation:
Extreme heat often stresses the skin first. The widening of blood vessels leads to visible redness, inflammation, and irritation.
2. Dry skin:
Prolonged heat exposure can cause dehydration, reducing your skin’s moisture levels. This dry condition happens because dehydration disrupts the skin’s natural moisturizing factors. Using moisturizers that protect the skin barrier is essential during hot weather.
3. Increased sensitivity:
Heat damage makes your skin more vulnerable to pollutants, allergens, and harmful microorganisms. This can trigger infections, inflammation, and heightened sensitivity. Such damage may also cause scarring, dark spots (hyperpigmentation), and speed up the aging process.
4. Blisters and peeling:
A weakened skin barrier is more prone to UV damage, which can lead to sunburn, discoloration, rashes, and in severe cases, blistering or peeling. These symptoms often point to deeper skin damage. As the outer layer heals, scaling and flaking may occur.
Tips to prevent heat stroke on your skin:
Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Avoid harsh skincare products; opt for gentle formulas designed for dry or sensitive skin.
Minimize direct sun exposure and seek shade whenever possible.
Use cool compresses, wet wipes, or splash water on irritated skin to soothe discomfort.
By paying attention to these signs and following preventive care, you can protect your skin through the hot summer months.
