The Minister of Public Health and Sahrawi refugee camp representatives discuss past successes and future plans to improve medical services.
The Minister of Public Health, Salek Baba Hasana, met on May 14, 2025, with a representative from the delegates organization in the Sahrawi refugee camps. The meeting took place in Shaheed El Hafed and aimed to strengthen the partnership between the Ministry and the delegates.
During the meeting, both parties reviewed the progress made over past years in healthcare cooperation. They discussed how the Ministry and the delegates have worked together to provide better health services for refugees living in the camps.
The representatives shared reports about the current health challenges faced by the camp residents. These include limited access to medical supplies, shortages of trained staff, and infrastructure needs. The Ministry acknowledged these concerns and expressed commitment to supporting improvements.
One of the key topics was the evaluation of the 21st Consultation and Coordination Roundtable on Health, held earlier in 2025. This event brought together stakeholders to discuss health priorities and funding opportunities. Both sides agreed on the importance of continuing such consultations to secure more aid for critical health programs in the camps.
The Minister emphasized the government’s intention to seek new partnerships and international support. He pointed out that improving healthcare in the camps is a shared responsibility. The Ministry plans to strengthen its coordination with local organizations, NGOs, and global donors to raise funds and resources.
The delegates stressed the urgent need to expand medical training programs for healthcare workers in the camps. They asked for more workshops and practical training sessions to help nurses, midwives, and doctors enhance their skills. The Ministry agreed and promised to increase technical support and organize capacity-building initiatives.
Additionally, both sides discussed the importance of improving public health awareness among the camp population. Topics such as hygiene, disease prevention, and nutrition were highlighted. The Ministry plans to launch new educational campaigns to encourage healthier habits and reduce the spread of illnesses.
The meeting also covered plans to improve infrastructure in the refugee camps’ health facilities. The delegates described problems with outdated equipment, limited beds, and inadequate sanitation. The Ministry confirmed it will prioritize funding for infrastructure upgrades in the coming months.
Both parties expressed hope that these efforts will lead to better health outcomes for Sahrawi refugees. They agreed to set up a joint committee to monitor progress and ensure ongoing communication. This committee will meet regularly to assess needs and coordinate activities.
The meeting ended with a shared commitment to continue working together. The Minister thanked the delegates for their dedication and valuable input. The delegates appreciated the Ministry’s openness and willingness to support the camps’ health sector.
Sahrawi refugee camps face many challenges due to their remote location and limited resources. Cooperation between the Ministry of Public Health and local organizations is essential to address these difficulties. This meeting marks a positive step toward improving the quality of healthcare services available to the refugees.
Moving forward, both sides will focus on securing additional funding, expanding training programs, upgrading facilities, and promoting public health education. The goal is to build a stronger, more resilient healthcare system that meets the needs of the camp communities.
As global attention continues to focus on humanitarian issues, this partnership highlights the importance of collaboration between government bodies and refugee representatives. Together, they hope to create lasting improvements that will benefit thousands of people living in difficult conditions.
