Natasha Hamilton, the star of the pop group Atomic Kitten, revealed that she was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2024. The 42-year-old singer had a Basal-cell carcinoma removed from her back after noticing an itchy red mole following a holiday. She has since described the experience as a “massive wake-up call.”
Hamilton believes her skin cancer was linked to her past use of sunbeds in the 1990s, a common practice at the time. Speaking to Scott McGlynn on Celebrity Skin Talk, she explained, “I actually had skin cancer last year. I had a Basal-cell carcinoma removed from my back, and it was a massive wake-up call for me. I have burnt my back so much over the years, and I used sunbeds when I was younger. Back then, everyone used a sunbed before a night out on a Saturday. The repercussions of that are now clear — I have to be super vigilant in the sun, always use high-factor sunscreen, and avoid burning.”
She added that she now checks her skin very carefully for any changes in moles and freckles. “Since then, there have been things that have come up, and I’ve had to go and have a look, using a microscope and keeping an eye on a few things. It was a massive wake-up call, and I’m now a big advocate for wearing SPF and protecting your skin.”
Hamilton, who is now cancer-free, admitted the diagnosis made her realize she is “not invincible.” She said, “I’m fine, honestly. It was found, it was cut away, and we move on. But it was kind of an ‘Oh, I’m not invincible’ moment. These things do happen to you sometimes, and you just have to look after yourself.”
Her experience has also made her concerned about young people using sunbeds. Natasha is calling for a ban on sunbeds in the UK, especially for those under 18. “Even though it’s 18 or over, you’re still a kid. You don’t understand the consequences. So yes, I would call for them to be banned. That might not be a popular opinion, but it’s mine,” she stated.
