Diana Taurasi, who announced her retirement earlier this year, is embracing life beyond basketball after an illustrious career. In a recent conversation with On3, Taurasi opened up about how she’s spending her time away from the sport.
“It’s been good. It’s been nice to have the time that I always use getting ready for the season,” Taurasi said. “Once the season started, I was always so focused on our team and how we could improve individually and together. Now, I’m really pouring myself into my family, friends, and people I haven’t had much time for before. It’s been wonderful to have less on my plate and just enjoy life.”
Taurasi devoted her entire WNBA career to the Phoenix Mercury (2004–2024), achieving nearly every milestone possible. She was an 11-time WNBA All-Star, made the All-WNBA First Team 10 times, earned MVP honors in 2009, and won three WNBA championships.
Looking back on her final season, Taurasi averaged 14.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Did she know 2024 would be her last year on the court?
“I went into the season in the best shape I’ve been in a long time,” Taurasi shared. “We had a new coach, a new GM, and a revamped roster. I wanted to give that year my all. Did I know it was going to be my last? At 42, every season can be your last. That was probably in the back of my mind, but I never wanted the final year to feel like a farewell tour because it would shortchange the team’s goal to win a championship, which we ultimately didn’t achieve. When the offseason ended and January came around, that’s when I really started prepping for the season opener in May. After that game, I knew it was time to be done.”
In retirement, Taurasi has turned her focus to helping those living with eczema. She partnered with Sanofi and Regeneron to raise awareness about the challenges of moderate-to-severe eczema. Taurasi herself began treatment with Dupixent, which has helped her manage her condition effectively.
“I wasn’t familiar with the medication or the companies at first,” she said. “But as I learned more, I saw how Dupixent can truly transform someone’s life. Everyone’s experience is different, so it’s important to talk with your dermatologist. For me, it’s revitalized my daily life.”
Taurasi also reflected on how eczema affected her during her playing days. “I had these internal battles during flare-ups when I had to go to practice or games, wearing a jersey. It was something I was always conscious of, even if others didn’t notice. It distracted me from the game and took my focus away from what mattered most — playing basketball. That’s why Dupixent has been such a game-changer for me.”
Now enjoying retirement, Diana Taurasi is not only cherishing her personal life but also inspiring others by sharing her experience with eczema and advocating for better awareness and care.
