Dr. Varinder Kumar, a dermatologist at Civil Hospital in Nawanshahr, warns that online skincare trends are causing more harm than good. In an interview with Avneet Kaur of Tribune News Service, he discussed the rise in skin problems, the risks of popular treatments, and the importance of professional guidance.
Dr. Kumar said fungal infections have become very common, especially in summer. High temperatures increase sweating, creating moist areas underarms and inner thighs that encourage fungal growth. Heat also causes conditions like prickly heat and sunburn. Poor hygiene and tight, non-breathable clothes worsen these problems.
Popular treatments like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and laser therapy have helped with hair loss, pigmentation, and acne scars. But Dr. Kumar stressed that these procedures must be done only by qualified dermatologists. He warned that untrained practitioners offering these services can cause burns, infections, scarring, and long-term damage.
Diet and lifestyle also have a big impact on skin health, he said. Eating oily, fried, or spicy food can trigger acne, especially in people with oily or sensitive skin. Alcohol and red meat may worsen chronic conditions like psoriasis. High calorie and sugary diets can lead to weight gain and skin changes such as dark patches known as Acanthosis Nigricans. Stress affects hormones, which can increase oil production and worsen skin problems.
Dr. Kumar criticized the growing trend of self-treatment based on social media advice. Many people, especially teenagers, use multiple products just because they saw them recommended online. He highlighted a common myth that natural or herbal products are always safe, but some can cause allergic reactions or irritate the skin. He urged people to remember that skin types vary, and what works for one person might harm another.
His key message: avoid blindly following trends and seek advice from qualified dermatologists to get safe, effective treatment tailored to your skin.
