Doctors are warning that scabies is becoming a growing public health concern. Left untreated, the disease can lead to serious complications, including kidney damage.
Scabies causes red rashes and intense itching across the body. In some cases, the skin can break and bleed. While many people mistake the symptoms for a heat rash, it is actually a different condition altogether.
The situation is worsening in densely populated areas, where the infection is spreading more rapidly. Experts say the rise in cases is largely due to a lack of awareness and people delaying treatment.
Dr. Jahed Parvez, Assistant Professor at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, described scabies as a “silent epidemic,” where people suffer in silence while the infection spreads throughout the country.
Dr. Mohammad Tariquzzaman Mia, also an Assistant Professor at the same hospital, noted that scabies typically affects areas like the fingers, wrists, navel, genitals, and buttocks.
To help control the spread, doctors recommend that anyone in close contact with an infected person, including family members or household members, should be treated at the same time.
