On June 9, Dr. Anita Shelgikar, a neurologist and sleep specialist, was named the 40th president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Shelgikar took on the role during the SLEEP 2025 conference.
In her one-year term, Shelgikar will lead the AASM, which has a membership of 9,500 professionals, including doctors, scientists, and healthcare workers. She is tasked with guiding the organization to achieve its strategic goals, focusing on public awareness, integrating technology, enhancing practice success, and advocating for better patient outcomes.
“I am committed to driving innovation, improving interdisciplinary collaboration, and supporting research that will transform patient care in sleep medicine,” Shelgikar said in a statement.
Shelgikar is a long-time member of the AASM and has contributed to various committees, including the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Directors Council Steering Committee, Fellowship Models Exploratory Committee, and the Education Committee. She was first elected to the board of directors in 2018, served as secretary/treasurer, and recently completed a three-year term as president of the AASM Foundation board.
“There are millions of people affected by sleep disorders, and many more who struggle to get the restorative sleep they need,” Shelgikar explained. “I am honored to lead the AASM in advancing sleep medicine research and improving treatment for sleep disorders to enhance patients’ quality of life.”
In addition to her role at the AASM, Shelgikar is a professor of neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School, where she also serves as the program director for the sleep medicine fellowship. She earned her medical degree at Wayne State University, completed her neurology residency at Emory University, her sleep medicine fellowship at the University of Utah, and a master’s degree in health professions education at the University of Michigan.
