FT Island’s Hongki has shared his long battle with a rare skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa, which he has lived with for nearly 20 years.
During a recent appearance on the SBS variety show My Little Old Boy on June 15, Hongki opened up about the challenges of dealing with the disease, describing how it has impacted his daily life. He revealed that he recently visited the hospital for a check-up due to symptoms near his armpit and wanted to get his buttocks examined as well.
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that causes painful, pus-filled lumps in areas of the body with sweat glands, such as the armpits and buttocks. It leads to recurring abscesses, inflammation, and, in more severe cases, the formation of tunnels under the skin. These symptoms can severely affect a person’s quality of life.
“I’ve had boils since I was young and have undergone eight surgeries,” Hongki shared. “Because of the scars from these surgeries, I avoid going to public bathhouses.” He recalled a particularly difficult moment in middle school when a boil burst during class, soaking his uniform with blood and pus. “I didn’t even think about going to the hospital at the time—I just went home early.”
Hongki’s doctor explained that he once visited the hospital with a boil as large as his palm, which required urgent drainage. Tests also showed that a new boil was developing near his armpit, signaling the need for continued treatment. The doctor mentioned that his condition might improve as he gets older, particularly as male hormone levels naturally decrease in his 40s.
With a busy schedule ahead, including upcoming festival performances, Hongki emphasized the importance of staying on top of his health. “This isn’t just a skin issue—it affects your whole life,” he said. “Catching it early is essential.”
In addition to his medical treatment, Hongki’s lifestyle was also reviewed. His diet, which included a lot of greasy takeout, alcohol, and e-cigarettes, was identified as a possible factor worsening his condition. The medical team has strongly recommended changes to his lifestyle to help manage the disease more effectively.
Hongki’s story highlights the difficult and ongoing battle many face with chronic conditions, and his openness about his struggle has drawn support and sympathy from fans and viewers alike.
